Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to schedule an appointment or can I do a walk-in?
While we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment, we are pleased to welcome walk-in clients as availability allows. Walk-ins are accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in a walk-in session, we encourage you to arrive promptly at opening to increase your chances of securing a spot that day.

How do I make an appointment if I live here?
To schedule an appointment, please email us at [email protected] or complete the request form on our “Contact Us” page. Upon receipt of your inquiry, we will provide a brief questionnaire to better understand your preferences and requirements, enabling us to offer tailored guidance throughout your experience. After you return the completed questionnaire, we will coordinate a consultation with your chosen artist, subject to their availability. Once your consultation is complete and your deposit has been received, your tattoo appointment will be officially confirmed.

Please note that a security deposit (cash only) is required to secure your booking for any new tattoo work, regardless of whether you are a new or returning client. This deposit will be applied toward the final cost of your tattoo. For tattoos requiring multiple sessions, the deposit will be deducted from the cost of your final session.

How can I make an appointment if I am visiting?
If you are traveling from another island or from overseas, we strongly recommend scheduling your appointment 1 month in advance. To begin the process, please contact us by email at [email protected] or by phone at (808) 369-6652 to arrange a consultation. During your consultation, you may also reserve a tattoo appointment; however, please note that your booking will only be confirmed upon receipt of a security deposit. Appointments without a deposit may be subject to cancellation.

When reaching out, kindly provide the dates of your visit (arrival and departure), a brief description of the tattoo you are interested in (including design, placement, and size), and your preferred artist. As artist availability can vary, we recommend listing two to three artists if possible. You are also welcome to include reference images to help us better understand your vision.

To secure your appointment, a security deposit is required. Deposits may be mailed as a money order to our mailing address prior to your arrival. For your convenience, we also accept payments through Western Union or MoneyGram. Should none of these options be available to you, please let us know and we will be happy to discuss alternative arrangements.

How much is the security deposit?
A security deposit of $100.00 USD per person is required for all machine tattoo work.
A security deposit of $200.00 USD per person is required for all traditional tapping tattoo work.

All security deposits are non-refundable unless you provide at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Security deposits are required for all clients booking a new tattoo, including returning clients.

For clients traveling from out of town, please mail your security deposit as a money order (no cash or personal checks) to our mailing address. Make the money order payable to Soul Signature Tattoo, and include a note with your name, your artist’s name, and your appointment dates for reference. Once your security deposit is received, we will confirm all bookings and promptly notify you of your appointment status.

How old do I have to be to get tattooed?
Clients 18 years of age and older are eligible to receive a tattoo; a valid government-issued photo ID is required at the time of your appointment.

In accordance with Hawaii state law, minors may be tattooed with the written consent of their parents or legal guardian. Both parents must be present with valid photo identification to sign the necessary consent documents. If the minor is under the care of a legal guardian, official documentation verifying legal guardianship, as well as valid identification, must be provided.

All minors must be accompanied by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) throughout the entire tattoo procedure, from start to finish. Please note that we do not perform tattoos on children under the age of 16 under any circumstances.

How much will my tattoo cost?
A minimum charge of $100.00 applies to all tattoos, regardless of size or complexity. Final pricing is determined by several factors, including the style of artwork, placement, and overall size of the tattoo. Please note that we do not provide price quotes via email or telephone; an in-person consultation with one of our artists is required to receive an accurate estimate. If you have a specific budget in mind, please inform us during your consultation. Our artists are committed to working with you to achieve your desired result while respecting your price range. For larger or more intricate pieces, multiple sessions may be recommended to ensure optimal quality and to allow for greater flexibility in managing costs. Sessions for extensive work typically last between four to six hours and can be scheduled at intervals that best suit your needs, allowing you to distribute the overall cost over time.
We believe that investing in quality tattoos is paramount, as your tattoo is a lifelong commitment. As the saying goes, “A quality tattoo is not cheap, and a cheap tattoo is not quality.”

Traditional Tapping Tattoos:
We welcome and encourage any questions or concerns you may have regarding the traditional tapping tattoo process. A common question we receive is, “Can I receive a tapping tattoo even if I am not Polynesian?” The answer is yes. We believe in sharing our cultural traditions with those who approach the experience with respect for the procedures and protocols of traditional tatau.

As a client, you are invited to share your preferences regarding placement and size for your tapping tattoo. However, it is important to understand that the selection and arrangement of designs and patterns are solely at the discretion of the tufunga (master tattooist). The tufunga will create a unique design that reflects your story and respects the cultural heritage of our art form. If, during the design process, you find yourself wishing to dictate specific patterns or rearrange elements, it may indicate that you are not yet ready for a traditional tatau experience.

Traditional tapping may be limited to certain areas of the body. If you are interested in receiving a tapping tattoo in a location not commonly displayed in our portfolio, please consult with us for guidance.

If you have a personal story or meaning you wish to incorporate, we encourage you to share it with your artist. Our artists will thoughtfully integrate your narrative, drawing from the legends and metaphors of our islands to create a meaningful, culturally authentic piece.

Sulu’ape Aisea is committed to cultural exchange and has assisted individuals from various backgrounds in reviving their own tattoo traditions using the tapping method. If you belong to a culture with specific designs or patterns and wish to explore their inclusion through traditional tapping, please let us know. Examples of this cross-cultural work include collaborations with individuals from Aztec, Nigerian, Mortlock (Chuuk), Filipino, and Rotuman backgrounds, among others.

Is Soul Signature Tattoo clean?
At Soul Signature Tattoo, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and client comfort. Our studio is meticulously sanitized to provide a warm and welcoming environment. We use only sterile, single-use needles and disposable gloves for every procedure. All additional equipment and supplies are medically sterilized using an autoclave to ensure optimal safety. For traditional tapping tattoos, each needle is custom-made, single-use, and sterilized specifically for each client.

Once I get tattooed, what am I not allowed to do?
For our visiting clients, we strongly recommend scheduling your tattoo appointment toward the end of your stay. After receiving a tattoo, it is critical to avoid swimming in the ocean or pools, as well as direct exposure to sunlight, as these activities can compromise the healing process and affect the final outcome of your tattoo. Limiting outdoor activities during the healing period helps to prevent complications and ensures optimal results.

By planning your appointment accordingly, you will be able to fully enjoy your vacation prior to starting the healing process. Please treat your new tattoo as you would an open wound—carefully follow the aftercare instructions provided by your artist to promote proper healing and preserve the quality of your tattoo.

Can you draw out the artwork for my tattoo before my tattoo appointment?
*Yes: Clients may request their artist to prepare a custom drawing for their tattoo, with the exception of tribal work. A nonrefundable security deposit of $100 is required before the artist will begin the design process. Please note that for larger pieces and cover-up tattoos, the artist may opt to draw the design directly on your skin using markers to ensure proper placement and flow.

*No: All tribal tattoos are created freehand. We believe that the human body serves as the ideal canvas for traditional tribal work. Designs that appear well on paper may not translate as intended once applied to the contours of the body. Our artists are extensively trained to structure and place each element according to the natural movement and anatomy of each client. Dedication to ongoing study and respect for ancestral traditions guide our practice as we freehand all tribal designs directly onto the skin.

If you wish to bring reference images or examples—such as tattoos found online—we are happy to review them as inspiration. However, we do not replicate existing artwork. It is important to remember that widely circulated designs may result in similar tattoos for multiple clients. As a highly custom studio, we prioritize originality and encourage you to allow your artist the creative freedom to produce a truly unique piece. Please refrain from dictating specific designs or patterns so that the final result reflects both your vision and the artist’s expertise..

What are the types of payment method?
Please note that we accept cash payments only. For your convenience, there are several banks in the vicinity, and most neighboring businesses are equipped with ATM machines.

 Aftercare:
At Soul Signature Tattoo, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and hygiene. All equipment and surfaces are thoroughly sterilized before and after each appointment, and we use only single-use, disposable needles and protective barriers to ensure a safe environment for every client. In addition to your tattoo service, we provide comprehensive aftercare instructions as well as a high-quality aftercare ointment to support your healing process.

Once you leave our studio, it is your responsibility to follow the prescribed aftercare regimen to protect the integrity of your new tattoo. Soul Signature Tattoo is not liable for any complications arising from improper aftercare or negligence. Healing experiences may vary from person to person, and several factors can influence the final appearance of your tattoo, including exposure to direct sunlight, risk of infection, underlying skin conditions, and changes in your body due to aging or weight fluctuation.

We strongly encourage you to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns during your healing process. Our team is here to support you in achieving the best possible result from your tattoo experience.
